500 Days Later: The Gift I Didn’t Know I Needed

There are milestones that you circle on the calendar.

One year.
Six months.
Five hundred days.

And then there are the days that sneak up on you.

Yesterday was both.

Five hundred days ago, I made one decision that quietly changed everything. I didn’t know where it would lead. I didn’t know if I’d make it a week, let alone 500 days. I just knew I couldn’t keep living the way I had been.

If you’ve followed my journey, you’ve watched what happened next.

I started writing.

I started healing.

I started saying yes to opportunities that terrified me.

I launched a podcast.

I started a travel business.

I’ve met people I never imagined I’d meet. I’ve had conversations I never thought I’d be qualified to have. I’ve found purpose in places I wasn’t even looking.

But here’s what social media doesn’t always show.

Lately… life has felt heavy.

There are so many moving pieces right now that some days it feels impossible to keep them all in the air. There are exciting things happening, uncertain things happening, stressful things happening all at the same time.

I’ve learned something over these last 500 days:

Sobriety doesn’t remove life’s problems. It changes the person who faces them.

Five hundred days ago, I would’ve reached for a drink to quiet the noise.

Today, I sit with it.

I feel it.

I work through it.

Sometimes gracefully…

Sometimes not.

But I don’t run from it anymore.

Tuesday evening someone handed me a gift. (Thank you Lori)

At first glance it was just a beautiful plaque sitting in a gift bag.

Then I read the words.

“Whether you have one day or one thousand days, you are an inspiration. You have one day that someone else hasn’t yet reached. Your example can change lives.”

And just like that…

I lost it.

Not because it was expensive.

Not because I needed another decoration.

Because she saw me.

When you’re in the middle of building something, it’s easy to focus on everything that’s left to do instead of everything you’ve already done.

That gift reminded me to stop.

To breathe.

To look backward for just a minute before charging ahead.

Because 500 days ago…

I wasn’t planning podcasts.

I wasn’t helping people plan dream vacations.

I wasn’t writing blogs that strangers tell me helped them stay sober another day.

I wasn’t speaking openly about mental health, identity, or starting over at forty.

I was simply trying to survive one day without alcohol.

And somehow…

One day became two.

Two became thirty.

Thirty became a year.

A year became five hundred.

People sometimes ask me what sobriety has given me.

The obvious answer is that it took alcohol away.

But the better answer is this:

It gave me my life back.

Not a perfect life.

A present one.

A life where I remember conversations.

Where mornings aren’t filled with shame.

Where I trust myself again.

Where my relationships are more honest.

Where my dreams feel possible instead of impossible.

Where I can experience joy without wondering if it’s only because I have a drink in my hand.

It gave me clarity.

Purpose.

Peace.

It gave me me.

If you’re reading this and you’re on Day 1…

Or Day 7.

Or you’ve been thinking about quitting but haven’t found the courage yet…

Please know this:

You don’t have to commit to 500 days.

I never did.

You only have to commit to today.

One day has always been enough.

And maybe that’s why those words on that plaque hit me so hard.

“You have one day that someone else hasn’t yet reached.”

Whether today is your first day or your thousandth, someone is watching.

Not because they expect perfection.

But because they’re looking for proof that change is possible.

I hope my 500 days can be that proof for someone else.

Because someone else’s story once became that proof for me.

Here’s to the next 500.

One day at a time.

❤️
